Myth: Just caused by poor parenting

There are quite a few myths and misconceptions about ADHD. I have discussed some in previous posts and I’m about to address another.

Another misconception about ADHD: it’s causes by poor parenting.

I’m here to tell you that this isn’t the case. ADHD is a neuro-developmental disorder, after all.

Sure, lax parenting can cause misbehavior and make things appear worse. However, even if the parents change their parenting style, the ADHD symptoms won’t go away entirely. The child will still struggle with their ADHD.

So, although research shows there may be some environmental causes, there is no link between ADHD and bad parenting.

For all the parents out there with kids struggling with ADHD, don’t listen to those who blame it on bad parenting. Although there seems to be a few different causes for ADHD, bad parenting doesn’t appear to be one of them.
